Ownly Privacy Policy

Ownly ("Ownly," "we," "us," or "our") respects your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how Ownly collects, uses, stores, and discloses information when you use the Ownly website, application, and related services (collectively, the "Service").

Ownly is intended for individuals 14 years of age or older.

1. Information We Collect

We aim to collect only information reasonably necessary to provide and operate Ownly.

Account Information

Ownly accounts are created through Google Sign-In. Ownly does not create passwords and does not request, receive, or store passwords in any form.

Google Sign-In

When you sign in with Google, Ownly receives information necessary to create and authenticate your account, which may include:

• Your email address;
• Your name;
• A unique account identifier; and
• Other information provided through the authentication process.

Ownly does not request or receive your Google account password.

2. Information You Provide

Depending on the features you use, Ownly may collect information that you voluntarily provide, including:

• The numbers you enter for your financial analysis: your monthly income and spending, cash, investments, time horizon, the stocks or funds you pick (and any amounts you add), and your risk choice, along with the grade Ownly works out from them;
• Questions you ask Otis, Ownly's AI mentor, and Otis's answers;
• Educational progress, such as lessons finished;
• Quiz or activity results, including your answers in a live class quiz;
• The class you join, or the classes you create as a teacher;
• Account preferences;
• Feedback; and
• Other information you voluntarily submit through the Service.

Ownly never asks for bank account, card, or government ID numbers. We encourage users not to provide unnecessary sensitive personal information, including in questions to Otis.

3. Automatically Collected Information

When you use Ownly, certain technical information may be automatically collected by Ownly or our service providers.

This may include:

• IP address;
• Browser type;
• Device type;
• Operating system;
• General usage information;
• Date and time of activity;
• Error and diagnostic information; and
• Security and technical logs.

The exact information collected depends on the technologies and services used by Ownly.

Ownly also keeps a copy of your progress in your browser, so the app opens quickly and works without a connection. Signing out removes it from that browser.

4. How We Use Information

We may use information to:

• Create and maintain accounts;
• Authenticate users;
• Provide Ownly's educational features, including Otis's answers to your questions;
• Save educational progress and preferences;
• Maintain and secure the Service;
• Detect and prevent fraud, abuse, and unauthorized access;
• Troubleshoot technical problems;
• Improve Ownly;
• Respond to questions and support requests;
• Communicate important service information;
• Comply with applicable laws; and
• Perform other purposes disclosed when information is collected.

5. Google Authentication

When you use Google Sign-In, Google handles the authentication process.

Ownly does not receive your Google account password.

Information provided to Ownly through Google authentication is used to establish and maintain your Ownly account and provide associated functionality.

Google separately handles information according to Google's applicable terms and privacy policies.

6. Third-Party Service Providers

Ownly uses third-party services to help develop, host, secure, and operate the Service.

These may include:

Vercel

Vercel may provide hosting, deployment, infrastructure, and related technical services for Ownly.

Depending on our technical configuration, information transmitted through Ownly may be processed by Vercel as part of providing these services.

GitHub

GitHub is used by the Ownly development team for software development and source-code management.

Ownly does not intentionally send users' personal information to GitHub merely because GitHub is used to develop Ownly.

Upstash

Upstash provides the database where Ownly stores accounts, progress, and classes.

Anthropic / Claude (Otis)

Otis, Ownly's AI mentor, is powered by Claude, an AI model made by Anthropic. When you ask Otis a question, Ownly sends Anthropic your question, your recent conversation with Otis, your first name, and the numbers from your analysis (income, spending, cash, investments, time horizon, holdings, risk choice, and grade), so that Otis can answer for your situation. Ownly does not send Anthropic your email address or your last name.

Anthropic processes this information to produce Otis's answer, under the commercial terms that apply to Ownly's use of Claude, which do not permit Anthropic to use it to train its models.

Claude may also be used by the Ownly development team for software development, research, testing, or related development purposes. Ownly does not intentionally provide users' personal information to Claude solely because Claude is used as a development tool.

Market data providers

Providers such as Finnhub supply stock prices, company information, and financial news. They receive the stock symbols and search words used to look these up, not information about who you are.

7. How We Share Information

Ownly does not sell users' personal information.

Teachers

If you join a teacher's class, that teacher can see your name and your course progress: whether you have finished your analysis, the lessons you have finished, your quiz scores, your stage medals, and when you were last active. Teachers never see your money numbers or your conversations with Otis. During a live class quiz, the class sees the top three by first name and last initial.

The Ownly team

Ownly's owner tools show each account's name, email address, sign-up date, last activity, and course progress, so that the Ownly team can run the Service and respond to requests. They do not show your money numbers or your conversations with Otis.

Service providers and legal requirements

We may share information with service providers that help us operate the Service, including providers of:

• Hosting and infrastructure;
• Authentication;
• Security;
• Databases;
• Communications;
• Analytics; and
• Technical support.

We may also disclose information when reasonably necessary to:

• Comply with applicable law;
• Respond to valid legal requests;
• Protect the safety or security of users or others;
• Detect or prevent fraud or abuse;
• Protect Ownly's rights or property; or
• Address security incidents.

8. Advertising

Ownly does not currently sell users' personal information.

If we introduce advertising, targeted advertising, or advertising-related tracking, we will update this Privacy Policy and provide any disclosures, consent mechanisms, or privacy choices required by applicable law.

9. Age Requirement

Ownly is intended for users 14 years of age or older.

Ownly does not intentionally design the Service for children under 14.

By creating an account, you confirm that you are at least 14 years old.

If we become aware that an individual under 14 has created an account, we may take appropriate action, which may include suspending or deleting the account and associated information as required by applicable law.

10. Data Retention

We retain personal information only for as long as reasonably necessary to:

• Provide the Service;
• Maintain account functionality;
• Maintain security;
• Prevent fraud or abuse;
• Resolve disputes; or
• Comply with legal obligations.

When information is no longer reasonably necessary, we may delete or anonymize it in accordance with applicable law.

In particular: earlier versions of your progress are kept for up to 30 days, so that a mistake can be undone; answers in a live class quiz are kept for about three hours; and a sign-in lasts up to 60 days unless you sign out.

11. Account Deletion

You can download your data or delete your account at any time in the app's Settings. Deleting your account erases your account, your progress and its earlier versions, your place in a class, and any classes you teach, and signs you out everywhere.

You may also request deletion of your Ownly account and associated personal information by contacting ownlyeducation@gmail.com.

Certain information may be retained where reasonably necessary to comply with legal obligations, maintain security, prevent fraud, or resolve disputes.

12. Security

We use reasonable technical and organizational safeguards designed to protect personal information against unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, or destruction.

No online service can guarantee complete security.

Because Ownly accounts are accessed through Google Sign-In, the security of your Ownly account depends in part on the security of your Google account. Users are responsible for protecting their Google account and should not allow others to use it.

13. Your Privacy Rights

Depending on where you live, applicable privacy laws may provide you with rights regarding your personal information.

These may include, where applicable:

• The right to request access to personal information;
• The right to request correction of inaccurate information;
• The right to request deletion;
• The right to obtain information about how personal information is used; and
• Other rights provided by applicable law.

We may take reasonable steps to verify requests before fulfilling them.

14. California Residents

California residents may have additional rights under applicable California privacy laws.

Ownly does not sell users' personal information.

Additional privacy protections may apply to minors under California law.

15. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy as Ownly's features, technology, or legal requirements change.

If we make material changes to how we collect, use, or disclose personal information, we will provide notice appropriate to the circumstances and obtain any consent required by applicable law.

The "Last Updated" date at the top of this Privacy Policy indicates when it was most recently revised.
