Accessibility
Last Updated: October 26, 2026
Ownly is built for students and teachers in real classrooms, which means it has to work for everyone in the room: with a keyboard, a screen reader, zoomed text, reduced motion, or a phone.
What we aim for
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA across the website and the app.
How we check it
- Every change is checked automatically before it ships, on desktop and phone sizes, with axe-core against WCAG 2.1 A and AA. The check covers the front page and sign-in, the app in light and dark mode, lessons and quizzes, Otis, Settings, the teachers’ page and its live class quiz, and these information pages. A change that introduces a problem it can detect does not ship.
- Text colors are chosen to meet WCAG AA contrast, in light and dark mode.
- Ownly’s controls are built as real buttons, links and form fields, so they work from the keyboard. Escape closes lessons, Otis, word definitions, dialogs and the teachers’ side panels, and tables that scroll sideways can be scrolled from the keyboard.
- Every website page with a menu at the top starts with a “Skip to content” link, shown when you press Tab, that jumps past the menu. In the app, each screen’s content comes before its menu, so you reach the content first, and the menu is marked as navigation for screen readers.
Features that help
- Listen: lessons can be read aloud by your browser’s own voice.
- Dark mode: choose Light, Dark or your device’s setting in the app’s Settings.
- Reduced motion: if your device asks for less motion, Ownly’s animations stop or are replaced with simple changes.
What we know is not there yet
- Automated checks catch many problems but not all of them. Ownly has not yet had a full manual audit with assistive-technology users, so we do not claim full WCAG 2.1 AA conformance.
